Every IT team has a second inventory problem: the gear that never runs an agent. Printers, switches, access points, firewalls, hypervisors, and loaner tablets still need tags, locations, serials, and someone accountable when they move.
Assets is InventoryOS’s CMDB for that world. It sits next to Agents so your team does not bounce between a spreadsheet for printers and a portal for PCs.
What belongs in Assets
Use Assets for items that should not (or cannot) run the InventoryOS desktop agent. Typical rows include:
- Printers and MFPs with IP, MAC, location, and toner-oriented custom fields
- Network gear such as switches, APs, and firewalls
- Virtual hosts and other infrastructure you still need on the books
Phones are different. They enroll through Mobile inventory and appear in Agents, not as Assets CMDB rows.
Discovery: find what is on the wire
From the Assets toolbar, open Discovery, add CIDR targets, and run an IP scan. InventoryOS shows live progress, classifies hosts when it can (optional SNMP v2c for printers and network gear), and lists unmanaged gaps.
- Unmanaged: Responding host not yet in Assets
- In Assets: Already tracked
- Dismissed: Noise you chose to ignore (you can restore later)
Windows-like hosts are steered toward Agents instead of network Assets, so you do not create the wrong kind of record by mistake.
CSV import without the cleanup marathon
Already have a tracking spreadsheet? Upload CSV, auto-map columns, review rows, and confirm. InventoryOS flags missing names, unknown locations, and duplicate serials or asset tags before import. Export the current list with the same columns when you need to edit offline and re-import.
Custody and custom fields
Checkout and check-in keep an audit-ready custody timeline. Per-type custom fields let printers track toner models while network assets track VLANs or cost centers, without forcing one giant form on every category.
Get started
- Open Assets in InventoryOS and create a few printers or network devices manually.
- Run Discovery against a small CIDR and create assets from unmanaged hosts.
- Import your existing CSV once the mapping looks right.
- Read the product tour on Products → Assets or the docs for Assets overview.
